PhD Dissertation at the College of Education for Humanities Examines Yemeni Migrants to Medina and Their Contributions to Public Life during the Prophetic Era and the Rightly Guided Caliphate

A PhD dissertation was defended at the College of Education for Humanities, Department of History, at University of Tikrit on Sunday (May 3, 2026), by the student Waleed Hassan Saleem Al-Jubouri. The dissertation was entitled:

“Yemeni Migrants to Medina and Their Contributions to Public Life during the Prophetic Era and the Rightly Guided Caliphate – A Historical Study.”

The study examines migrants from Yemen to Medina prior to the conquest of Mecca, focusing on their contributions to public life during the era of the Prophet and the Rashidun Caliphate. It also explores the Yemeni tribes from which these migrants originated, as well as the general conditions of those tribes. The research highlights a group that has not received sufficient attention in historical scholarship compared to other groups of the same period.

The study identifies several motivations behind their migration, including that migration to Medina was a condition of allegiance prior to the conquest of Mecca, the pursuit of learning the Holy Qur’an, participation in jihad, strengthening the Muslim community numerically in relation to Jews and polytheists, and the difficulty of sending preachers beyond Medina at that time.

The study reached several key findings, including:

  1. The migration of Yemenis to Medina was largely voluntary, and their tribes did not oppose them as occurred with migrants from Mecca.
  2. Yemeni migrants contributed to transferring elements of Yemeni civilization and culture to Medina.
  3. Migrants affiliated with Kahlan ibn Saba’ outnumbered those affiliated with Himyar ibn Saba’.
