PhD Dissertation at the College of Education for Humanities Examines Urban Structures in Pre-Islamic Yemeni Cities: A Political and Civilizational Study

A PhD dissertation was defended at the College of Education for Humanities, Department of History, at University of Tikrit on Sunday (May 3, 2026), by the student Waadallah Zaidan Wahb Al-Mafraji. The dissertation was entitled:
“Urban Structures in Pre-Islamic Yemeni Cities: A Political and Civilizational Study.”

The selection of this topic stems from the scarcity of specialized studies addressing the urban aspects of Yemeni cities in the pre-Islamic period, despite their rich architectural diversity that reflects a profound historical and civilizational heritage. The research represents an attempt to understand the geographical, religious, and economic factors that influenced the formation of urban structures in Yemen, including temples, palaces, الأسواق, and water systems.

Furthermore, the study seeks to link the urban characteristics of ancient Yemeni cities with the historical and political developments experienced by the region, thereby offering a comprehensive vision of Yemen’s urban history prior to the advent of Islam.
