A PhD dissertation was defended at the College of Education for Humanities, Department of English, at University of Tikrit on Sunday (May 3, 2026), by the student Maher Mohammed Yousif Al-Obaidi. The dissertation was entitled:
“The Effectiveness of Using the Circumlocution Strategy in Word Recognition and Literary Text Comprehension among University Students of English as a Foreign Language.”
The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using verbal circumlocution strategies in enhancing word recognition among university students learning English as a foreign language within literary texts. It further examines the impact of this strategy on different components of word recognition, namely: literal, situational, and contextual levels.
In addition, the study explores the effectiveness of the circumlocution strategy in improving students’ comprehension of literary texts, focusing on multiple comprehension levels, including: literal, reorganization, inferential, evaluative, and appreciative. The research also seeks to identify differences in the achievement of the experimental group in both word recognition and literary text comprehension in the post-test, as well as to determine whether statistically significant differences exist between recognition and production levels.
