A master’s thesis was discussed in the Department of Geography at the College of Education for Humanities on Monday (May 11, 2026), submitted by the candidate Alia Imad Sabir, entitled “The Geopolitical Analysis of Turkey’s Strategic Influence in the Caucasus Countries.”
The study analyzes Turkey’s influence in the Caucasus region through its political, economic, and social dimensions, as well as its impact on regional balances. The significance of the research stems from the vital geopolitical position of the Caucasus as a bridge between Asia and Europe and as an arena of competition among regional and international powers. The research problem focuses on the extent to which international variables have contributed to the revival of Turkish influence toward the Caucasus states, while also examining the role of geographical factors in activating this influence and forecasting its future scenarios.
The study adopted the descriptive–analytical approach by tracing Turkish relations with Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia in the post–Cold War era. The findings indicated that Turkey’s influence is based on supporting allies, strengthening strategic partnerships, and managing conflicts. Economically, Turkey has enhanced its presence through energy projects, pipeline networks, and trade exchanges. Culturally and socially, it has relied on historical, linguistic, and religious ties, as well as educational programs. This influence has contributed to strengthening Turkey’s regional position, while simultaneously increasing the complexity of regional balances due to competition with Russia and Iran. The study concluded that the sustainability of this influence depends on Turkey’s ability to manage its relations with competing powers and achieve regional equilibrium.
