Master’s Thesis at the College of Education for Humanities Discusses the Causes of Revelation and Their Impact on Qur’anic Interpretation: Surah Al-Baqarah as a Model – A Thematic Study

A Master’s thesis was defended at the College of Education for Humanities, Department of Quranic Sciences and Islamic Education, at University of Tikrit on Wednesday (April 29, 2026), by the student Abdulaleem Subhi Ahmed Al-Jubouri. The thesis was entitled:

“The Causes of Revelation and Their Impact on the Interpretation of the Holy Qur’an: Surah Al-Baqarah as a Model – A Thematic Study.”

The study examines the concept of the causes of revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul) and their application in the interpretation of the Holy Qur’an, taking Surah Al-Baqarah as a representative model.

The study reached several significant findings, including:

  1. The causes of revelation constitute a fundamental element in clarifying the meanings of Qur’anic verses and determining their intended legal implications.
  2. Knowledge of the causes of revelation aids in understanding the historical and social context in which the verses were revealed.
  3. The causes of revelation help resolve ambiguities and apparent contradictions among certain similar verses.
  4. They contribute to identifying the specific individuals or events to which particular verses were revealed.
  5. Many legal rulings in Islamic law are مرتبط with specific incidents and circumstances during which the verses were revealed.
